Progression: Works by Ruth Daniels

June 20 to August 4, 2014

Reception: Friday, June 27, 6 to 8 pm

CAMBRIDGE, MA (May 23, 2014) — When asked what inspires her as an artist, Ruth Daniels answers, “Everything from A - Z inspires me. Art, books, candy, detritus, entertainment, fractals, games, horses, images, Japanese prints, knowledge, labyrinths, magnetic fields, nature, optical illusions, patterns, quilts, rakes, Stonehenge, tools, UFO’s, Vikings, wavelengths, x-rays, yarn, Zen.” She is also motivated to save the planet: ever since she read Linda Weintraub’s Cycle-Logical Art: Recycling Matters for Eco-Art, Daniels has been busy using up her art supplies. “Once this inventory is depleted,” says Daniels. “My intention is to make the most of fewer supplies focusing on less is more.” Because Daniels won first prize in the 2013 3D Small Works Salon, the results of her past year’s inspiration and motivation are now on display at the Chandler Gallery.

New Perspectives

Work featuring a variety of media from Sacramento Street Preschool, Kindergarten Afterschool and 1-5th grade Afterschool.

Preschool through 5th grade students in the Agassiz Baldwin Children's programs took to the gallery with their unique vision to create a space that explores their young perspectives.

Filled with vibrant colors and diverse materials, the works include floor tiles, sculptures, and wall hangings.

The show gives a glimpse into the world of our youngest gallery participants.

The show runs until Play Day on June 14th with a closing reception during the event.

Direct / Indirect Small Works 2014
artwork combining print and drawing

A juried exhibition of artwork at the Chandler Gallery
Juried by Bill Flynn

April 1 to May 9, 2014

Reception: Sunday, April 13, 3 to 5 pm

CAMBRIDGE, MA (March 24, 2014) – The new show at the Chandler Gallery breaks all the rules. Drawing is often defined by the immediate, direct gesture—the impulsive or deliberate mark mediated by the human hand — while printmaking is often indirect, involving a transfer from surface to surface with the process as a mediating factor. The Chandler Gallery's 2014 Small Works Salon, "Direct/Indirect," celebrates works that combine these two contrasting yet intimately related mediums. The pieces defy definition, blurring the boundaries that separate drawing and printmaking in concept, execution and finished artwork. Juror Bill Flynn, a professor emeritus of the School of the Museum of Fine Arts and an accomplished artist with a background in both mediums, says that he sought "collages that joggle your brain" along with "a little bit of poetry."

Bill Flynn has awarded prizes to the following artists:

1st Place: Wendy Prellwitz

2nd Place: Roz Sommer

3rd Place: Chris Hassig

1st Place: Wendy Prellwitz’s “Departure” demonstrates how beautifully the two mediums can speak to one another.

2nd Place: Roz Sommer's "Mom's Coffeepot 1"

Robert Siegelman's "Missing Pages" evokes the cacophony of a crowded train station.

Jon Imber: Painting Up A Storm

LIVE TO PAINT, PAINT TO LIVE
Jon Imber’s Upcoming Exhibits Redefine Lively Brushstrokes

CAMBRIDGE, MA (January 15, 2014) – Jon Imber bestows life upon each portrait he paints, and now the portraits—over 100 that he has completed since August—are returning the favor. “I paint because I love to make images,” says Imber. “I love turning inert stuff into magic. Now I am also painting to stay alive.”
